The own organization as a killer of innovation?!
Innovation is not a hygiene factor for companies, but rather a necessity for survival and a decisive competitive advantage.
In particular, the (further) development of digital business models is of decisive importance. However, many initiatives fail not because of the market, but often because of their own organization!
In a completely new approach, we therefore examined 75 leading companies from various industries to determine HOW they have set up their business model initiatives organizationally and what works and what does not. With astonishing results.
The study highlights a crucial need to tailor organizational settings to achieve ambidexterity. While patterns for innovation within the core business are relatively straightforward and tend to remain stable, venturing beyond the core requires adaptive approaches throughout various innovation phases.
Core results on innovation around core business ("around core"):
To thrive in the digital landscape, companies need to embrace the following success patterns:
1. Digital team collaboration across units fosters success by leveraging diverse expertise.
2. Avoid the pitfall of no defined organizational structure; embrace clarity to enhance outcomes.
3. Leverage external partners strategically for long-term innovation success.
4. Question the exclusive decision-making role of top management; empower teams at all levels.
5. Balance proximity to the core business for optimal outcomes.
Core results on innovation beyond core business ("beyond core"):
When pushing the boundaries of innovation, organizations should focus on the following success patterns:
1. Customize organizational structure for each phase (Discovery - Incubation - Acceleration) to achieve digital transformation success.
2. Empower middle management as innovation catalysts bridging top-down and bottom-up approaches.
3. Challenge top management decisions; encourage experimentation and learning from failures.
4. Embrace core business proximity to foster radical new ideas.
5. Reassess the value of specialized support teams for innovation.
